Temple of Uluwatu

Location

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is located on the southeastern island of Bali, exactly in the village of Pecatu district of Kuta, Badung regency. Located on the edge of a steep rock overlooking the sea, as a buffer of 9 temples across Bali. The three overlapping Meru is a worship to Betara Rudra as a manifestation of God Almighty. This temple is one of Pura Sad Kahyangan Jagat Bali. The six World heaven temples of Bali concists of Pura Besakih, Pura Lempuhyang Luhur, Pura Goa Lawah, Pura Luhur Uluwatu, Pura Luhur Batukaru, and Pura Pusering Jagat. Besides, it is one of  Dewata Nawa Sanga temples  as buffers of  Jagat Bali as mention above.

Before entering outer yard 'Jabaan' Pura Luhur Uluwatu your first look is Pura Dalem Jurit. Here there are three sculptures, a statue of Bhatara Brahma, Ratu Bagus Dalem Jurit and Betara Vishnu. Ratu Dalem Jurit really is Deva Shiva Rudra.




A bit of History

The temple was formerly a Mpu Kuturan shrine, a holly priest in te 11th century. He ended his last sacred trip or 'moksah' or 'ngeluhur' in this place, which is said to be the origin of the name of Pura Luhur Uluwatu. Pura Dalem Jurit is an extension of Pura Luhur Uluwatu in the time of arrival of Dang Hyang Danghyang in the 16th century.




Piodalan

Piodalan at Pura Uluwatu, Pura Dalem Jurit, Pura Pererepan and Pura Kulat falls every 210 days on Tuesday Kliwon Wuku Medangsia according to the Balinese calendar
