Pura could mean city like Alengkapura, Hastinapur, Jayapura, Amlapura, Semarapura and others. The word Pura later on evolved into a place of prayer, a holy place to worship the God with all its manifestations. Pura also as a place to worship the sacred spirits of the ancestors. Additionally temple as a place of respect for the greatness of the holy teacher. They have been credited with laying the foundations of religious teachings. This sacred place is often referred to as heaven, celestial or kahyangan.

The main function of temple is a sacred place to worship God and Its manifestations. In each village is built Kahyangan Tiga consisting of Pura Desa / Baleagung, Pura Puseh, and Pura Dalem. Those three holy places dedicated to the worship of Betara Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, each of which functions as the creator, maintainer, and destroyer of the universe and its contents.
Pura Kahyangan Jagat or Celestial Universe
Temple built in every
corner of the island and supported by all people. Pura Kahyangan Jagat as a
padma bhuwana of Bali is the castle of the God that has the function of
maintaining the balance of Bali from various
shocks. According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs 2001, the nine Celestial
Universe Temple consists of Pura Besakih in Karangasem regency, Pura Batur in
Bangli regency, Pura Lempuyang Luhur in Karangasem regency, Pura Andakasa in
Karangasem regency, Pura Goa Lawah in Klungkung regency, Pura Uluwatu in Badung
regency, Batukaru temple in Tabanan, Pura Pucak Mangu in Badung regency, and
Pura Puser Tasik (Pusering Jagat) located in Gianyar regency.

Holy place to worship the holy spirits of the
ancestors called Paibon, Dadia, or Padarman. This temple was founded by the
people who have family ties by birth. Every smallest family consisting of
father, mother, and children possessed a shrine called Sanggah / Merajan. When
the original families developing that have children, grandchildren, and pyrite,
the original shrine then turned into Sanggah Gede or Pamerajan Agung. Furthermore,
on a broader level of family they set up a place of worship called Pura Dadia.
If the clan was again enlarged to include Jagat Bali, then they have a place of
worship called Padarman, which usually take place at Pura Besakih, like
Padarman Bandesa Manik Mas, Padarman Arya Kepakisan and others.

Pura also as a place to honor the service and the greatness of the holy teacher. Hindus feel 'indebted' to the services of holy teachers who have laid the foundation of Hindu religion and their teachings. Pretended to be in this group according to Babad Bali Site, such as Pura Purancak, Pura Rambutsiwi, Pura Pulaki, Pura Ponjok Batu, Pura Silayukti, and Pura Kentelgumi. The said Pura above relating to spiritual journey or dharma yatra conducted by Dang Hyang Nirartha dan Empu Kuturan in their roles as Great Tachers or Dang Guru.
There
are also temples associated with the royal temple shrine in earlier time such
as Pura Taman Ayun as a temple the Kingdom
of Mengwi , and Pura Dasar
Gelgel of Kingdom Gelgel.
Pura Kahyangan Jagat orCelestial
Universe Temple
consists of nine temples serve as a padma bhuwana or earth lotus island of Bali ,
shrines of Hyang Widhi - the God and its manifestations, who maintain the
regularity island
of Bali . Pura Kahyangan
Jagat shall be composed of three groups that are based on the concept of
rwabhineda, caturlokapala, and sadwinayaka. Celestial Universe
Temple which is based on
the rwabhineda conception consist of Pura Besakih as purusa (the nature of
male) and Pura Batur as pradhana (the nature of female). Kahyangan Jagat which
is based on the caturlokapala conception are Pura Lempuyang Luhur, Pura
Andakasa, Pura Batukaru, and Pura Pucak Mangu. While Kahyangan Jagat based on
sadwinayaka conception consists of Pura Besakih, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, Pura Goa
Lawah, Pura Uluwatu, Pura Batukaru, and Pura Pusering Jagat. Kahyangan Jagat
Bali belonging to the group of six is called Pura Sad Kahyangan Jagat Bali. (sourses:
